When the spark of inspiration meets the fuel of possibility.

Young Man is smiling and speaking into a microphone, He has short dark hairMy name is Harry and I work at The Usual Place as an Information Intern. However, I began here as a trainee in the Cafe’s Front of House team.

Before coming here I did very little: my day consisted of me being sat about the house the whole time, and rarely ever leaving home. But a spark of inspiration made me realise I needed a change, and so I decided to join somewhere to gain employability. I looked around, but it was The Usual Place that was truly there for me when I needed it. Now, I can firmly say I’m glad I made that choice.

It was back in August 2024 when my family and I were watching the Paris Olympics. Before that point, I had left education and was doing virtually nothing with my life. But when I saw Olympians that were around my age, and the incredible things that they were all doing, it sparked a desire for change in me. I was in a comfort zone, and although it was easy for me, I knew it had to change, and now was the time to take ownership of my life. The Usual Place was the organisation that enabled me to do that.

Working in the Front of House of The Usual Place Cafe gave me the opportunity to deal with lots of different situations that were all very new to me. Before joining, my people skills were extremely limited, but that’s all changed after having to interact with customers here.

ow, talking to people is no longer a chore, and my own social abilities are no longer a barrier. I have managed to participate in public speaking events, having spoken to a room of over 90 people at the Fine Dining Event hosted at The Usual Place in collaboration with The Globe Inn. I have even appeared on TV and I showed John Swinney MSP, The First Minister of Scotland, around our café when he visited last April. I also provided a voiceover for a section of a TV Broadcast of The Royal Foundation’s ‘Together at Christmas’ Community Carols Service in December 2025. These are just some of the incredible opportunities that The Usual Place has allowed me to experience.

Now, as well as working here on all things digital, I am also back in full-time education, heading towards achieving my dream of working with computers on a course at Dumfries & Galloway College in Advanced Computing.

The Usual Place was there exactly when I needed it and has allowed me to transform my life. My days are rich with interesting challenges, opportunities to connect, learning, and with plenty of things to do. I realise life is so much better when you can be actively engaged. When I am at home now, I am purely relaxing after a day of work or college or studying. Now I know for certain I have a fulfilling and vivid career ahead of me. HARRY
